About Us
A&G Ohio began back in 2006-2007 with Jason Taylor, Michael Taylor, Josh Farley and Dusty Davis on the way back from an Random Battle Group event. We were kind of bummed that the events that we were going to did not think that same way we did in terms of entertainment. We were an overzealous group of idea driven guys that just wanted to take what we liked to do at LAN Parties, Conventions and Life, roll it into a event that we could be proud of…
With a dream and a couple dollars, Jason Taylor put his life on hold and in 2008 A&G Ohio debuted in Akron, Ohio, bringing Michael McConnohie and Melodee Spevack to Ohio for the first time, working with Professional DJ’s to bring a spectacular dance, and new events: Pokemon’ Musical, Cosplay Wrestling. The weather of early February hit hard, with ice storms across the area. The storm was so fierce that we had to chisel out the trailers tires on Sunday to move it! Attendance was a little under what we expected, but we came out of our first year with 400+ Attendees, a new sense of what we needed to work on, even more crazy ideas for the future and what needed to happen in order to make this thing succeed.
Not all was great news though as hotel in Akron broke contract in a move that almost buried A&G Ohio.
After much searching we did not feel that any hotels would give us the type of atmosphere we desired for the convention, and we moved away to Cincinnati, Ohio. The move was mostly due to it being the 3rd largest city in Ohio and also recently was vacated by Ikasucon that was now in Indiana and Sugoicon in Kentucky. The Holiday Inn Eastgate was the perfect choice for us! Great location, great people and staff that was easy to work with.Tracy with the Holiday Inn and the Management team shared our goal of wanting to put A&G Ohio on the map. In between all of this we replaced convention Vice Chairs to current holders: Josh “Panda” Farley and Matt “Atomic Cow” Lamond. March 2009 A&G Ohio officially took over the Holiday Inn Eastgate in Batavia/Cincinnati, Ohio. We really did not know what to expect as we moved 5 hours south of the previous years location, but came out beautifully! 800+ Paid Attendees, and a hotel that was happy with the group. keeping our tradition alive of new guests (Richard Epcar, Ellyn Stern) to the area and new Musical (Resident Evil Musical), wrestling event and more. After that everything just seemed right. We stuck to what worked for us, not worrying about what everyone else was doing, guests that they had, or even how they ran classic events. We spent all our extra money on big guests year after year (Steve Blum, Wendee Lee, etc) giving fans a rare opportunity to mingle with guests that are usually kept behind the scenes. Attendance in 2010 grew to just over 1,000 in paid attendance and we started looking toward future locations and ideas.
A&G Ohio 2011 came back around faster than any of us could have imagined. We had been working on the new location research, bringing in new music acts, and even help from a new wrestling organization (Bizarro Wrestling). Pre-Registration alone grew by over 40%, with all of the adult badges being sold out by Saturday before noon. We sold child badges as adults and were a mere step away from capping attendance!
After the convention we took a step back and we decided to try and give back in 2012 and thank all of the fans, guests and people that have supported us over the years. We wanted to focus on what made A&G Ohio what it is, but better! Fix all the issues from the past 5 years and blow our returning attendees away. To do this we first needed to settle on a location. After negotiating with many different locations all over the region, we picked the Great Wolf Lodge Resort as our host. Looking forward to 2012 we want A&G Ohio to be just that.. A&G Ohio! I want to keep people in their seats at amazing main events, great game rooms, music and just being ourselves!
Till next time, stay classy.
FAQ
We thought it would be nice to give some facts on our beloved convention, since we have had so many ask us.
- A&G Ohio = Animation & Gaming. Not Anime. Though A&G Ohio does define Animation in a broad spectrum, that includes anime. We are not an anime convention. Do not expect to come and see panels on Japanese Culture or J-Rock acts, etc.
- Party Con? It should be no surprise to convention attendees in general that every convention is a party to attendees. Do we approach things differently? Yes, most definitely. We would rather give up panel room space late night to have a 21+ lounge area so that attendees will NOT ONLY avoid getting ejected from their rooms for noise, but be a part of what A&G Ohio is all about. Being Social!
Not only for 21+ attendees is A&G Ohio a party con though. We tend to think of it as a celebration and all ages catch the spirit of the con and enjoy themselves so much that they can not wait for the next year. We love our fans! - Am I Banned? Sure, there has been a few people that have caused problems in the past. Till this day no one is banned from A&G Ohio. If anyone is ever to be banned from A&G Ohio you would have not only known while at the convention, but also in an email re-confirming the actions via: Conchair@AandGOhio.com
- Location Choice? We chose our location with our attendees best interest at heart. We had multiple meetings and no other event space was more genuinely accommodating than the Great Wolf Lodge. We could have went downtown, attendees paid $120-$150 a night for a room $10-20/day for parking. We figured that having a bit more room costs outweighed everything. With these rooms you receive a mini-fridge, microwave and free parking!
- Oh God, Another CCC? We do respect all the hard work that Donnell has done with CCC, but we did not move to the GWL to be like them or compete with them. As stated A&G Ohio is Animation and Gaming, CCC is Anime and Japanese Culture based. What about the waterpark? We did not even figure the waterpark in our decision when picking our location, but it does add an added bang for the attendees buck.
